Panel Discussion on Mass Incarceration on 3/30

The United States incarcerates more of its citizens than any other nation in the world. With a prison population of nearly 2.3 million, this country confines a quarter of the world’s prisoners, but has only 5% of the world’s population. The prison-industrial complex has become the go-to solution for a host of social problems, including mental illness, homelessness, drug addiction, and more. Everywhere, budgets for social welfare programs are cut repeatedly, while police, prosecutors, and courts receive all the funding they need and more.

As an abolitionist organization, the Guild supports eliminating mass incarceration. Join us on Saturday March 30 at Pitt Law School for a presentation and panel discussion featuring a diverse range of speakers on the destructive effects of mass incarceration, and possible remedies.

This event is co-sponsored by the United Steelworkers.

Refreshments will be served.

When: Saturday, March 30 at 1 PM

Where: Pitt Law School, Barco Building in room 107, 3900 Forbes Avenue

Speakers include:

Douglas Ward of USW’s Human Rights Committee, who will present some basic facts and statistics about mass incarceration.

Guillermo Perez of the Labor Council for Latin American Advancement, who will talk about immigration and mass incarceration.

Chardee Galan, a clinical psychologist at Pitt, who will talk about mass incarceration of minors.
